My friends,
So thank you all of you for coming today and I also want to welcome all of those who are joining us via livestream
This is a joyful day for the whole family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
We’re here this morning to introduce you to Father Juan Manuel Gutierrez, who has an amazing story to tell.
Father Juan is one of our new priests, ordained just two years ago, and currently serving as associate pastor here at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Father Juan is also a man for whom Our Lord has worked a miracle. We praise God for that, and we want to share his story with you.
In 2017 when he was a seminarian here in the archdiocese at our St. John’s Seminary, he suffered a serious leg injury while playing basketball with some other seminarians.
Facing a painful surgery, Father Juan prayed to the Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, asking for his intercession. And he was healed.
So his healing was a miracle, his doctors could not explain it.
Of course, miracle is a word that gets overused in our culture and is not well understood.
But the Scriptures tell us that Jesus worked miracles on earth: he gave eyesight to a blind man, made a lame man walk, and raised a young girl from the dead, to recall just a few of the miracles that Jesus worked on earth.
And we believe that Jesus continues to work miracles from heaven, often through the intercession of the saints who are close to him there.
We don’t pray to the saints, but we do ask the saints to pray for us. And we believe that Jesus hears, not just our prayers, but also the prayers that the saints make for us.
So now Pope Francis has confirmed this and has decided that, on account of this miracle, he can now declare Blessed Pier Frassati a saint.
So we praise God today. We are also grateful to Pope Francis for his wisdom, and we are looking forward to the canonization of St. Pier Frassati next August at the Vatican.
So we have been truly blessed here in Los Angeles that God has raised up for us so many saints, just to name a couple: Venerable Maria Luisa Josefa of the Blessed Sacrament and the great missionary St. Junípero Serra, founder of the Church in Los Angeles.
We have also been blessed with visits from many saints from across the universal Church, from St. Frances Xavier Cabrini to St. John Paul II and St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Los Angeles is truly a city of the angels and also a city of saints. Now, we have a new saint who is watching over us from heaven.
And Blessed Pier Frassati truly is a saint for our times, a model for all of us, but especially for our young people.
He was a young man who loved life and enjoyed it to the full. He was a good friend to others, a good son, and a good brother. And he was a man of deep prayer who taught us to find Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and the face of the poor.
Some of his last words were these: “I will wait for them all in heaven.” And I am confident through his prayers, Our Lord will lead many to follow him there.[1]
So it is a beautiful day for Los Angeles and I hope that you will have with your families a Merry Christmas.

Estimados amigos,
¡Bienvenidos! Gracias a todos por venir hoy, y bienvenidos a todos los que se unen a nosotros por la radio y a través del internet.
Este es un día de alegría para toda la familia de Dios aquí en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles.
Estamos aquí esta mañana para presentarles al Padre Juan Manuel Gutiérrez, que tiene una historia increíble que contar.
El Padre Juan es uno de nuestros nuevos sacerdotes, ordenado hace dos años, y actualmente es como pastor asociado aquí en la Parroquia de San Juan Bautista.
Dios Nuestro Señor ha obrado un milagro en la vida del Padre Juan. Hoy damos gracias a Dios por este milagro y queremos compartir su experiencia con ustedes.
En 2017, cuando era seminarista en nuestro Seminario de San Juan, sufrió una grave lesión en la pierna mientras jugaba al baloncesto con otros seminaristas.
Y como necesitaba una operación muy dolorosa a una el padre Juan le rezó al Beato Pier Giorgio Frassati, pidiéndole su intercesión y recibió su curación.
Su curación fue un milagro que sus médicos no pueden explicar.
Por supuesto, la palabra milagro es una palabra que se utiliza mucho en nuestra cultura y, por eso ha perdido poco a poco su verdadero significado.
Pero las Sagradas Escrituras nos dicen que Jesús hizo milagros en la tierra: Solo recordando algunos de sus milagros, le dio la vista a un ciego, hizo caminar a un cojo, y resucitó a una niña.
Y desde luego nosotros creemos que Jesús sigue obrando milagros desde el cielo, y muchas veces a través de la intercesión de los santos que están cerca de Él en el cielo.
Muchas veces pedimos a los santos que recen por nosotros. Y creemos que Jesús escucha, no sólo nuestras oraciones, sino también las oraciones que los santos hacen por nosotros.
Después de su curación el Padre Juan notificó a los funcionarios del Vaticano que había recibido este gran favor a través de las oraciones de intercesión del Beato Frassati.
El Vaticano investigó su caso, entrevistó a sus médicos y a otros testigos, estudió todas las pruebas médicas, y concluyó que efectivamente su curación había sido un milagro.
El Papa Francisco lo ha confirmado y ha decidido que, gracias a este milagro, el Beato Pier Frassati se puede declarar santo.
Así que hoy damos gracias a Dios por la curación del Padre Juan Manuel y también estamos agradecidos al Papa Francisco por su sabiduría, y esperamos con anticipación la canonización de San Pier Frassati el próximo mes de agosto en el Vaticano.
Es una gran bendición para todos nosotros aquí en Los Ángeles haber tenido la presencia de muchos santos, entre ellos la Venerable María Luisa Josefa del Santísimo Sacramento y el gran misionero San Junípero Serra, fundador de la Iglesia en Los Ángeles.
También hemos sido bendecidos con la visita de muchos santos de toda la Iglesia universal, desde Santa Francisca Javier Cabrini a San Juan Pablo II y Santa Madre Teresa.
Los Ángeles es verdaderamente una ciudad de ángeles y también una ciudad de santos. Ahora, tenemos un nuevo santo que intercede por nosotros desde el cielo.
El Beato Pier Frassati es verdaderamente un santo para nuestro tiempo, un ejemplo para todos nosotros, pero especialmente para nuestros jóvenes.
Era un joven que amaba la vida y la llevaba en su plenitud. Era un buen amigo de los demás y un buen hijo y hermano. Y fue un hombre de profunda oración que nos enseñó a encontrar a Jesús en la Sagrada Eucaristía y en el rostro de los pobres.
Algunas de sus últimas palabras fueron estas: “Los esperaré a todos en el cielo”. Y tengo confianza de que, a través de sus oraciones, Nuestro Señor llevará a muchos a seguirlo hasta el cielo.
