Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

My heart goes out to all of your in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

I am praying for you and for your families and friends. And all of us in the universal Church around the world are praying for those lost and suffering because of this tragic storm.

Please remember that our God is near to us in our times of trouble, just as He is in our times of joy. Call on Him and keep close to Him in prayer!

In these times, it is also important that we reach out to one another in love and compassion. We need to show one another the love and nearness of God. Where there is love, God is there. So let us put more love into everything we do in these days.

In that spirit, this weekend here in Los Angeles we will be joining Catholics all across the United States in taking up a special collection for the needs of everyone hurt by Typhoon Haiyan. I am encouraging everyone to give generously to our brothers and sisters in the Philippines. What we do for them, we do for Jesus. So let us give with great love.

May God grant you peace and may Our Blessed Mother Mary give you refuge and comfort.
